The Deadline
| Situation | Deadline |
|---|---|
| Self-lodging (myTax) | 31 October 2026 |
| Using a registered tax agent | Typically May 2027 (agent manages the deadline) |
| First time using an agent | 31 October 2026 (must engage agent before this date) |
What Happens If You're Late
The ATO can charge a Failure to Lodge (FTL) penalty. The penalty is $313 for each 28-day period your return is overdue, up to a maximum of $1,565. The ATO usually sends a reminder before issuing penalties, but don't rely on this.
If you owe tax, interest also accrues on the unpaid amount from the due date. From 1 July 2026, the General Interest Charge is no longer tax deductible — making late payment even more expensive.
How to Lodge
- myTax (free): Log into myGov → ATO → Lodge tax return. Most information is pre-filled. Takes 15–30 minutes for a simple return.
- Tax agent: A registered tax agent lodges on your behalf. Costs $100–$400 for a standard individual return. They get an extended deadline (typically May 2027).
- Paper return: Still an option but not recommended — slower processing and higher error rate.
Before You Lodge — Checklist
- Check your income statement is marked 'Tax ready' in myGov (your employer finalises this)
- Gather receipts for work-related deductions (or use the new $1,000 standard deduction for 2026–27 returns)
- Check for private health insurance statement, government payments summary, bank interest
- If you have a HELP/HECS debt, check the repayment income thresholds
- If you have an investment property, ensure your depreciation schedule and expense records are ready
Common Refund Amounts
The average tax refund in Australia is about $2,500–$3,500. If your employer withheld tax throughout the year based on an estimate, your actual tax may be lower — resulting in a refund. Refunds are typically processed within 2 weeks of lodging electronically.
Can't Afford to Pay?
If your return shows you owe money and you can't pay in full, contact the ATO before the deadline. They offer payment plans with no judgement. Setting up a plan before the due date avoids the worst penalties. Call the ATO on 13 28 61.

Usually 2 weeks if lodged electronically through myTax. Paper returns take 6–8 weeks. Using a tax agent: 2–4 weeks after they lodge.
