Federal Energy Bill Relief
The federal government has run national energy bill relief in recent years — most recently a $75-per-quarter credit through 2025, which ended on 31 December 2025. These were temporary measures announced in federal budgets. The 2026–27 Federal Budget (12 May 2026) did not announce a new national rebate, so no federal credit is currently being applied. The state-based rebates below are separate and continue. We'll update this section if Treasury announces new relief.
How to Claim
In most states, if you have a concession card, the rebate is applied automatically to your electricity bill once your retailer has your card details. Contact your energy provider and give them your concession card number. In some states you need to apply separately through a government portal.
Beyond Rebates — Reducing Your Bill
- Compare retailers: Use the government's Energy Made Easy (energymadeeasy.gov.au) or Victorian Energy Compare to find cheaper plans
- Switch to a better plan: Many households are on expensive default plans — switching can save $200–$500/year
- Solar: A 6.6kW system costs $4,000–$8,000 after rebates and typically pays for itself in 3–5 years
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a concession card for energy rebates?
For most state rebates, yes — your retailer applies them automatically. National federal relief, when it is running, also applies automatically; but there is no national rebate active right now (the last one ended 31 December 2025).
How do I apply?
Contact your energy retailer and provide your concession card number. Most retailers apply the rebate automatically once they have your details.
Can I get rebates for gas too?
Some states offer separate gas rebates for concession card holders. Check your state's concession information page.
