The Answer
👔
TFN, super, pay rates, tax returns, and your rights as a new worker in South Australia.

Before You Start

  1. Get a Tax File Number (TFN) — apply online at ato.gov.au. Free. Without one, your employer withholds 47% tax.
  2. Choose a super fund — or your employer will use their default fund. Industry funds (AustralianSuper, HESTA, Cbus) often have lower fees.
  3. Fill in the TFN declaration — your employer gives you this. Tick yes to claim the tax-free threshold (from your main job only).
  4. Fill in the super choice form — to direct your super to your chosen fund.

Your Pay

The national minimum wage is $24.10/hour (from 1 July 2025). If you're under 21, junior rates may apply — typically a percentage of the adult rate. Check your award at fairwork.gov.au.
