Eligibility
- Be a permanent resident for at least 12 months (including at least 4 years lawfully residing in Australia)
- Not have been absent from Australia for more than 12 months in total during the 4 years, including no more than 90 days in the 12 months before applying
- Be of good character (no significant criminal history)
- Intend to live in Australia or maintain a close connection
- Pass the citizenship test (unless under 18 or over 60)
The Citizenship Test
20 multiple-choice questions about Australian values, history, and government. You need 75% (15/20) to pass. The test is free and can be taken at a Department of Home Affairs office. Study using the free resource: "Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond" (available online).
The Ceremony
After approval, you attend a citizenship ceremony — usually held by your local council in TAS. You make the Australian Citizenship Pledge and receive your certificate. Ceremonies are typically held on Australian Citizenship Day (17 September) or at regular council events.
After You Become a Citizen
- Enrol to vote — compulsory. Do it immediately at aec.gov.au.
- Apply for an Australian passport
- Notify Services Australia — your eligibility for some payments may change
- You can now serve on a jury in TAS
